They are scattered through out Japan and along with Mt. Fuji are a recognizable symbols of Japan. But Torii gates are more than just a decoration Torii Gates are the boundary between our world and the infinite world of the kami, they exist in between both the human world and the spirit world. Usually made of wood and painted red and black Torii gates are the entrance into the holy ground that resides within a Shinto shrine, because there is no actual gate within the Torii arch shrines are always open to visitors.
